Joint Venture - Silicon Valley announced back in September 2006 that Silicon Valley Metro Connect, a collaboration among Azulstar Networks, Cisco Systems, IBM (NYSE: IBM), and Seakay, has been selected to build and operate Silicon Valley's regional wireless network that will serve 2.4 million people. The open wireless network will offer universal broadband wireless Internet access to all Silicon Valley residents, employees and visitors spanning 42 municipalities and nearly 1,500 square miles. Now the latest news is that the network which was suppose to go live earlier this year in Jan or Feb doesn't even have a few test networks set-up. The task force is still negotiating with Metro Connect on a "model agreement" to form the basis of deals with each municipality. I just came back from InterOp trade show in Las Vegas. As usual John Chambers, CEO Cisco Systems, kicked-off the main event by keynoting on May 22nd. I found out from one of the InterOp organizers that the show was attended by about 20,000 attendees from all over the world. This is a big change from four years ago, when economy was soft, the attendance was probably half of this year's. One notable thing this year was that many wireless LAN companies were exhibiting in the general area instead of typical wireless zone.
