Joint Venture - Silicon Valley announced back in September 2006 that Silicon Valley Metro Connect, a collaboration among Azulstar Networks, Cisco Systems, IBM (NYSE: IBM), and Seakay, has been selected to build and operate Silicon Valley's regional wireless network that will serve 2.4 million people. The open wireless network will offer universal broadband wireless Internet access to all Silicon Valley residents, employees and visitors spanning 42 municipalities and nearly 1,500 square miles.

Now the latest news is that the network which was suppose to go live earlier this year in Jan or Feb doesn't even have a few test networks set-up.  The task force is still negotiating with Metro Connect on a "model agreement" to form the basis of deals with each municipality. Sticking points include details of prices, terms of service, minimum coverage, and privacy.  Read the entire story on PCWorld or Information week

InteropI just came back from InterOp trade show in Las Vegas.  As usual John Chambers, CEO Cisco Systems, kicked-off the main event by keynoting on May 22nd. I found out from one of the InterOp organizers that the show was attended by about 20,000 attendees from all over the world.  This is a big change from four years ago, when economy was soft, the attendance was probably half of this year's.  One notable thing this year was that many wireless LAN companies were exhibiting in the general area instead of typical wireless zone.

New Law Requires Wi-Fi Security PDF Print E-mail

The City of White Plains in Westchester County in New York recently passed a law making it illegal for “any commercial business that stores, utilizes or otherwise maintains personal information electronically” that do not take necessary security precautions on their wireless networks to guard against accidental or deliberate use. This is likely the first law of this nature in the U.S. The law only requires minimal security measures and doesn’t require a specific type of security. In fact, press releases from the County state that acceptable security can be simply changing the default SSID or disabling SSID broadcasting. This level of security may keep people from inadvertently seeing the network in Windows, but it’s useless for keeping someone from finding and accessing the network. The law doesn’t apply to public hotspots, but hotspot owners are required to remind users (through signage) to turn on security, such as personal firewalls. If users don’t follow these rules, they are breaking the law. So, if you’re in White Plains using a hotspot and not using proper protection, watch out for the “Wi-Fi police!”
