SFO Wi-FiI just read an article that offers some good tips on securing public Wi-Fi connections. While on the road this week (literally), I've been very conscious about security while checking email from public Wi-Fi hotspots. My email system uses SSL encryption, so I'm not too concerned about someone passively monitoring my data traffic and finding anything worthwhile.
I imagine that there are lots of less-technical users out there, however, who don't have a clue that their emails are sent in the clear.

Of course another danger to public Wi-Fi users is that they're connecting to a network with other users, including hackers. It's fairly easy for someone to access the files on your wireless laptop, for instance, unless you're using a personal firewall to block incoming access. So, definitely check whether or not your firewall is enabled (WindowsXP includes a built-in firewall).
