802.11n is taking off as more and more vendors release products and gain Wi-Fi certification based on the 802.11n (draft 2) standard. Click here to see a current list of Wi-Fi 802.11n certified products.

Fast growing

I've been watching this list grow for over a month. It's amazing how fast it's growing. However, when you visit a store there is almost no way to tell what is certified - none of the boxes have the new wi-fi logo on them, although some signage says draft (but which draft ?). In addition, the wi-fi list doesn't always show the exact model number covered - just a model name. To complicate things even more, version numbers are not shown on most of the boxes. So the only way to know which version it is, is to open up the box. Given the propensity of mfgs. to change internal designs without changing the model numbers, how can we be sure that what we buy will be draft 2 compatible? Is there any part of the wi-fi cert. that prohibits mfgs. from re-using the model numbers of certified devices?

You make a good point. There is confusion regarding what's certified and what's not, which is common when the standard is still in draft form. The only source that I know is accurate is the list on the Wi-Fi Alliance website. I'm not sure if the Wi-Fi Alliance has restrictions on reusing the model numbers. I'll try checking.

Early last week I wrote directly to the Wi-Fi people, regarding my concerns, using their web site contact form. I explained the dilemma, and noted my whole hearted support for the wi-fi certification program. So far, I have gotten no response.
Maybe you have had more success than I. I have spoken to others that have the same concerns.
I'd really want to think their certification is more than just a marketing gimmick.
I added my CISSP and CWNA accreditations to my signature line, hoping they would encourage a response - guess not !
