Foote Partners LLC released a study this week that claims they have seen the average premium pay for uncertified workers increase 8% and decrease 2.3% for certified engineers in the past year. What are your thoughts on certifications in the workplace?

certifications set a benchmark for interviews. Actual knowledge and skill sets the benchmark for payslips and recognition.
How do you get recognised without with out being interviewed and selected??

It's not just the money

Certifications are not just about the money. Most certified IT folks take great pride in their vocation and mastering essential subject matter such as Wi-Fi technology is regarded as essential. In my own case, I blithely rendered advice on wireless issues in the course of routine consulting project with clients. After months of studying and eventually passing the CWNA & CWSP exams, I realized to my horror and embarrassment, many of my concepts and ideas were incorrect and misleading. No real harm was done, however, it was a very humbling experience. In my opinion, certifications are simply a baseline requirement for IT professionals to ply their specialty trade – just the same as doctors, lawyers & accountants.
